Our ambition is to develop tectonic strategies that question the familiar, while subtly transforming it into something new. Our evolving language of contrasts, between the robust, heavy and sculptural on the one side, and the transparent, light and minimal on other, is carefully composed around the inventive use of common materials. Continuous research into products' potential and limitations, and close relationships with the people who commission and build our projects complement our office's formal design explorations. Within a project's programmatic, geographical and regulatory requirements, we seek out peculiarities, which can serve as a design parti, allowing a gradual evolution of type. Whether it is a particularly difficult site, a conflict between a building code constraint and a client's needs, or simply the desire to capture a spectacular view, these peculiarities imbue the mundane with purpose. The interaction of such specific purpose with our developing idiosyncratic architectonic language is not one-sided; the two influence each other in new ways with each new project. Our goal is to produce thoughtful, optimistic buildings that are contextually logical, astute and critical. We consider a project to be successful when its beauty, generosity and animation are a result of the continuous conversation between form and site, space and climate, user and enclosure; where the experiential qualities of a space makes our curiosity tangible through the articulation of conceptual ideals in relevant and visceral ways. |
