Corner Triplex and Suites reimagines what housing density can look and feel like in Edmonton’s established neighbourhoods. Developed as a Standardized Infill Design for the City of Edmonton, the project introduces six homes on a typical suburban corner lot while preserving the familiar qualities of single-family living: privacy, daylight, outdoor space, and a sense of belonging. Rather than adopting the conventional appearance of multifamily housing, the design draws on the architectural language of the surrounding neighbourhood. Familiar pitched roofs, natural materials, and carefully proportioned forms break down the building’s scale, allowing six homes to sit comfortably among existing houses. Generous overhangs respond to Edmonton’s climate, while the building’s modest height preserves sunlight and views for neighbouring properties. The result is an approach to density that feels less like a disruption and more like a natural evolution of the neighbourhood.
At its core, Corner Triplex and Suites demonstrates that thoughtful design, affordability, and everyday livability can go hand in hand. Conventional construction techniques, standardized materials, and repeated details create an economical building without sacrificing architectural character. Each of the six homes has its own visible street-facing entrance, generous natural light, opportunities for cross-ventilation, and access to outdoor space. Garden-level homes are treated with the same care and comfort as those above, eliminating the hierarchy often associated with secondary suites. Flexible interiors accommodate families, couples, and shared households, while private yards offer opportunities for both retreat and neighbourly interaction. By making efficient use of existing urban land and infrastructure, Corner Triplex and Suites offers a practical and compelling vision for gentle density: six distinct homes that retain the comfort, identity, and dignity of a house.
